VIDEO: How to dual-boot Windows 7 BETA on a Vista computer

Windows Vista / Windows 7

Windows 7 BETA was released to the public yesterday, and Microsoft fans everywhere have been anxious to give the anticipated new operating system a spin. Windows 7 is still in BETA (which means test mode), so it isn’t wise to wipe out your main computer and install the package. While some people will install Windows 7 BETA on a secondary computer, not all of us have that luxury, or feel like going through the hassle. For these people you can setup your main computer to safely dual-boot the new OS (even from the same hard drive).  The video below shows you how to add Windows 7 BETA to your Windows Vista computer without disrupting or modifying your Vista installation.

Some people are having problems with the “Shrink Volume” step in this tutorial. Apparently, if you have immovable system files located towards the end of your hard drive volume, then Windows Vista will not be able to move them to create a big enough 2nd partition.  I found a work-around to this problem HERE.  Let me know if this solves any of the problems.

Thanks a lot for this great easy tutorial of how to dual-boot two OS, but I was wonder about 2 things
1)Does the hard drive partition have to be unallocated?
    Or
Can I use a normal free 20 gig partition?

it would be really helpful if you could answer this question.

    Thanks

I believe you can install it on any partition. I am not sure if Windows 7 will format the partition and wipe it clear or not… I doubt it needs to. Either way it would give you warning before it did anything destructive to the partition I would think.
